Norwegian Theory Test in English – Free Practice

The Norwegian theory test (teoriprøven or teoritentamen) is the written part of the driving licence process for category B in Norway. It is taken digitally at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office (trafikkstasjon) and tests your knowledge of traffic rules, road signs, risk awareness, vehicle safety and first aid. You must pass the theory test before you can take the practical driving test (oppkjøring).

The theory test for category B consists of 45 questions. You must answer at least 38 correctly to pass — meaning you can have a maximum of 7 wrong answers. All questions are multiple choice with one correct answer. You receive your result immediately after completing the test.

You have 90 minutes to answer all 45 questions. The time is usually more than enough — most candidates finish well within the limit. If you need more time, you can ask for an additional 15 minutes at the test location.

The theory test costs 350 NOK. In addition, you pay 70 NOK for the driving licence photo taken at the trafikkstasjon. If you fail and need to retake it, you pay the full fee again.

The test is taken at a trafikkstasjon — the Norwegian Public Roads Administration's driver licensing offices. There are locations across the country. You can take the test as early as six months before you turn 18 — meaning from age 17 and a half. You must have an approved driving licence application before you can book a test appointment.

You book a test appointment on vegvesen.no through "Din side" (My Page) using BankID. You must first apply for a driving licence and wait for approval before you can book. If you do not have a Norwegian BankID, contact your local trafikkstasjon for assistance.

If you do not pass, you must wait at least 14 days before you can take the test again. You will need to pay the full fee for each attempt. You are told how many answers were correct, but not which specific questions you got wrong.

A passed theory test result is valid for three years. You must pass the practical driving test (oppkjøring) within those three years for the theory result to count towards your driving licence.

Yes. The official theory test for category B is available in English, Arabic (Modern Standard Arabic / MSA), Northern Sami, Sorani and Turkish, in addition to Norwegian. You can switch language at any time during the test. If you need a language not available digitally, you can apply to Statens vegvesen for an assisted theory test with an interpreter — you pay for the interpreter yourself.

Yes. You can apply to Statens vegvesen for an assisted theory test if you have special needs. There are two types: a test with an examiner, where you take the test orally in a separate room, and a test with an interpreter, where the test is conducted in a language not available in the digital system. You pay for the interpreter yourself. Applications are submitted to Statens vegvesen.

You do not need to have finished all mandatory courses before taking the theory test.
